District 50 educators know that while the Colorado economy may be booming, the children we serve often come from families who struggle to make ends meet. Cents for Kid recognizes that some of our students need additional help before the can be ready to learn. WEA members understand all too well the gap between what the District, social services, and other charitable agencies provide and what student often need. WEA also recognizes that our educators are in the best position to understand these special unmet needs of the students they serve. The Cents for Kids program is a response to these needs.
Cents for Kids envisions using the odd cents in our members paychecks as the basis for a fund to be used exclusively to assist District 50 students. For example, if a member's paycheck is for $2,00.41, the member may choose to donate the 41 cents to the fund. The fund will then be used to provide grants to our members so that they may assist students to be better prepared to learn.
The fund will be divided into two broad areas.
Funds used to help students with necessary clothing, school Supplies, and/or medical assistance.
Examples:
 | A warm coat for winter |
| Eye glasses or a visit to the ophthalmologist |
| School supplies |
| Membership fees to YMCA or similar organizations |
| Taxi fare to the doctor |
| A scientific calculator |
Awarded for innovative instructional and/or enrichment activities that will enhance the learning experience of District 50 students. Educators who are by nature very creative people, often lack the resources to fund their ideas.
| Prizes for a chess (and other) tournament |
| Materials for a craft project |
| Money for a guest speaker |
| Field Trips |
| Instruments for future musicians |
It is not the intent of Cents for Kids to in any way replace the existing funding of the District or the Community Foundation, but the fund may provide supplemental assistance in order to fill the gaps in funding.
