Know Your Contract

Leaving the building for 2 or more hours

for personal reasons

Once a month I need to leave the building to take care of some personal needs. Is my only option to take cumulative leave?

It depends on how long you will be out of the building. Article 8-8 Teaching Conditions provides:

ARTICLE 8Teaching Conditions

Article 8-8

8-1     When teachers substitute under the following circumstances for other teachers in their school, they will be compensated at an hourly rate calculated on the base salary and seven and one-half (7 ˝) hour day.

(a)   The teacher who needs coverage must request the building principal to authorize a substitute for limited class coverage for a personal or business reason;

(b)   The building principal will work with the requesting teacher to arrange the coverage and will keep records of such authorized coverage;

(c)   If the teacher is absent from 2 to 3.75 hours, one-half (1/2) day of cumulative leave will be charged; if the absence exceeds 3.75 hours, one (1) day of cumulative leave will be charged to the absent teacher.

(d)    f the building principal is not involved in arranging or authorizing the coverage, no payment will be made to the teacher who covers the class.

Less than two hours:

If you will be gone less than two hours, no cumulative leave needs to be used. If you need someone in your building to cover all or part of your class during the time you are gone, you must make the arrangements with the teacher that will be covering for you. No cumulative is used by you and the covering teacher is not paid for the extra work.

More than two hours:

If you will be gone over two hours, at least ˝ day of cumulative leave must be used. The building principal is required to help you obtain coverage and if a teacher within the building covers for you, that teacher will be paid an additional hourly rate based on the per diem rate of the base teacher salary (BA at Step1).

As with many other rights you have under the contract, the district is not obligated to inform you of your rights. It is up to you to Know Your Contract.
