Teacher Job Sharing

I am interested in dong a job share next fall.  How do I go about it?

WEA Teachers:

ARTICLE 11 – Job Sharing

11-1    The Job Sharing Program shall be limited to probationary and non-probationary status teachers of the District and teachers who are not involved in a Job Improvement Target Plan.

11-1-1    The Job Sharing Program contains, but is not limited to, the following characteristics:

1.   Both probationary and non-probationary teachers who request job-sharing options will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

2.   Involves only those teachers who have voluntarily agreed to participate.

3.   Teachers who are interested in participating in the Job Sharing Program must find their own partner with who to share a job.

4.   All preliminary requirements must be completed on or before March 15, prior to the school year in which the job sharing will commence.

5.   All teachers involved must be qualified for the shared position.

6.   Salary, benefits, PERA contributions, etc., will all be prorated, based on the division of work in the shared position.

7.   Service credit will be prorated for the period of the job sharing.

8.   Each job sharing team may request an extension of the shared position for another year.

9.   Participation in job sharing position shall not be considered an interruption of service to the District for the purpose of maintaining non-probationary status.

10.   Probationary teachers who are approved for job share will be given a contract by the School District that includes the conditions for job share.

11-2            Notwithstanding the provisions of Article 1-10, teachers who are already members of the bargaining unit and become job sharers under this Article shall be considered members of the bargaining unit.

11-3            Teachers interested in job sharing shall advise the Assistant Superintendent by February 1.  A list of such teachers will be posted in each school on or before March 1.

The procedures for getting your job share approved:

1.   The first step is to let HR know as soon as possible that you are interested in finding a job share partner.

2.   While the district is required to post notices before March 1st of all staff that are interested in finding a partner, it is to your advantage to begin the search for a partner now. Few teachers give notice that they want to job share so relying on this posting is not a good idea.

3.    Both partners must voluntarily agree to a job share and must complete all paperwork prior to March 15th.

4.   Job shares are typically for an entire school year. If the job share is successful, the job sharing team may request an extension for another school year.

The contract also spells out that the salary and benefits will be pro-rated based upon how the job share is set up. If both partners are going to be working 50%, for example, both would receive 50% pay and benefits.

You should therefore take steps now to begin the process of finding a partner. Be sure to let WEA know so we can also help with your search for a partner and help you to navigate any required paperwork.
