Horizontal Moves

Has there been a change in how horizontal moves take place?

Yes. The Teacher contract provides:

ARTICLE 34 – Compensation

Article 34-14  Upon completion of the course(s), request for placement on the salary schedule, Form II-Horizontal Movement Envelope shall be submitted to the Office of the Assistant Superintendent.  Such request shall be honored when accompanied by substantiating evidence such as a class registration form, a canceled check for fees paid, an official grade report, or a statement from the instructor on the condition that an official transcript is submitted to the Assistant Superintendent within 90 days of the request.

Article 34-15  Horizontal movements on the salary schedule will be implemented within thirty (30) calendar days of submitting the required substantiating evidence as described in Article 34-14.

As a result of grievances we filed last fall, the parties agreed that in the future:     “…horizontal movement on the Salary Schedule will not be implemented for any requests submitted after the end of the school year in June, July or August; such movement will commence with the Salary Schedule that is in effect for the new school year in September”

In addition:    “Horizontal movement on the Salary Schedule will not be implemented for requests submitted on or after the last work day by a teacher who retires/resigns/separates from employment.”

Therefore, it is up to you to submit the request for a horizontal move as early as possible before the end of the school year if you want to have the additional pay increase impact your current salary. If you delay in submitting the paperwork until June, your horizontal increase will not take effect until the following school year.
