Teacher - Attending Professional Conferences

Is there any support from the district for teachers that want to attend professional conferences and workshops?

The TEACHER contract provides:

ARTICLE 24-3 – Conventions or Professional Meeting Attendance  

24-3-1    The attendance of teachers at professional meetings has been universally accepted as beneficial to the District.  Teachers may be awarded expense allowances and/or leave with pay to attend meetings within approved budget appropriations.  Those wishing to attend must submit a request form to the building principal at least thirty (30) school days prior to the meeting.

 24-3-2    The principal will consult with the faculty in his/her building in selecting the meetings that will be attended and the staff who will attend, subject to the allocation received in that building for such conventions/meetings.

 24-3-3    Transportation will be paid on air coach fare, where applicable.  The per diem allowance will be provided in accordance with Board policy for the days of the meeting plus one day for travel, if required.

The contract therefore provides that faculty members can be given leave with pay and the district will also help defray expenses with the funds allocated to each building for this purpose. Any failure to consult with the faculty about the meetings that faculty will attend each year and the process for selecting which faculty members will go to professional meetings would be a violation of the contract. If your building faculty is not being so consulted, consider raising this issue first through your building’s WEA FAC (Faculty Advisory Committee). If that does not resolve the problem, contact the WEA office for further assistance.

As with many other rights you have under the contract, the district is not obligated to inform you of your rights. It is up to you to Know Your Contract.
